Maokai’s reign of dominance in the support role is set to end with targeted nerfs in the upcoming League of Legends Patch 14.4. Riot Games plans to address the overbearing strength he’s demonstrated since the beginning of the 2024 season.
Maokai’s Dominance
Riot Matt “Phroxzon” recently outlined the changes planned for Patch 14.4. Maokai’s persistent strength in the support position has made him a priority target for balance adjustments. Since the season’s start, Maokai has established himself as one of the top-performing champions, boasting win rates around 54-55% across various ranks.
The Roots of Maokai’s Success
Maokai’s versatile kit is a major factor in his recent success. His ability to provide crowd control, reliable engage, and powerful zone control with his ultimate, Nature’s Grasp, puts him in high demand. His strong laning phase, packed with sustain, damage, and additional crowd control, further propels him ahead of the competition. The new 2024 Explorer’s support items significantly boost Maokai’s effectiveness, providing additional engage tools and potent lockdown potential.
Patch 14.3 Changes Backfire
In an attempt to weaken Maokai in Patch 14.3, Riot reduced his power across his entire kit. This change inadvertently gave rise to a powerful top-lane build for the champion. Patch 14.4 will see further adjustments intended to curb his support strength specifically.
Patch 14.4 Maokai Nerfs
- Base armor reduced from 39 to 35.
- Q – Bramble Smash: Damage reduced from 70 – 270 to 65 – 265.
- R – Nature’s Grasp: Root duration reduced from 0.8 – 2.6 seconds to 0.75 – 2.25 seconds.
Meta Shifts With More Changes
Maokai isn’t the only support getting changes in Patch 14.4. Bard will also be nerfed, while champions like Thresh, Soraka, and Lulu get buffs to help level the support playing field.
