Undead Unluck, despite its intriguing premise and the involvement of David Production, fails to reach the heights of success achieved by My Hero Academia or Jujutsu Kaisen.
High Expectations, Disappointing Reception
With its fascinating premise and David Production at the helm, the adaptation of Undead Unluck was poised to be one of the dominating anime of the Fall 2023 season. However, according to many fans on social media, Undead Unluck continues to receive disappointingly lukewarm reception despite meeting the expected quality.
The Perfect Formula, Yet Shortcomings Persist
Under the direction of Yuuki Yase (Fire Force, Monogatari Series, Mekakucity Actors), with Gakuto Haishima (Fire Force) as the scriptwriter and Hideyuki Morioka (Fire Force, Monogatari Series) as the character designer, Undead Unluck seemed to have a perfect formula to stand strong and succeed in its debut season.
Unfortunately, various circumstances worked against this project, preventing it from achieving full success and rendering it “just another average anime.” What are the reasons behind this? Fans have begun to debate on a forum, and here are some of their assessments:
- Lack of Pre-release Marketing: It seemed to have very little pre-release marketing, not to mention the exclusivity deal with Disney Plus which limited its reach. “I love this show and have tried to get all my friends to watch it, but for some reason, they’re just not interested.”
- Mismatched Goals: “If the primary goal of an anime adaptation is to boost manga sales or have good merchandise sales but it doesn’t happen, then it’s a failure. I love Undead Unluck, so it’s hard to admit that the anime, despite its incredible quality, isn’t getting the love it deserves.”
- Quality Doesn’t Guarantee Success: “I don’t think Undead Unluck is a failure, but unfortunately, not every well-made show succeeds.”
- Streaming Service Exclusivity: “I haven’t been able to watch it because it’s exclusive to Hulu. It’s a terrible idea they’ve implemented.”
- Limited Accessibility: “The reason this anime might not be as popular elsewhere is that when a streaming service is overhyped and holds the rights to a new anime, I’m not sure many people will watch it.”
- Potential for Future Seasons: “If Undead Unluck had more seasons and went further, it might attract more people in subsequent parts.”
- Genre Appeal: “Undead Unluck isn’t as appealing a genre as Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man, and many people still start watching anime with dubbed versions or manga.”
By analyzing these perspectives, it becomes evident that while Undead Unluck may have its strengths, various factors contribute to its perceived lack of success in the broader anime landscape.
