Square Enix is placing big bets on two quirky shooters, Foamstars and Splatoon, to carve out a new niche in the gaming landscape. But with Foamstars facing comparisons to its ink-splattering counterpart, questions swirl about its originality and staying power.
Foamstars: More Than Just Bubbles
From the moment Square Enix unveiled Foamstars, its vibrant paint-with-foam premise triggered inevitable comparisons to Splatoon. But Kosuke Okatani, the game’s producer, is quick to dispel the “clone” label. While acknowledging the surface similarities, he highlights Foamstars’ unique twist: shot materials persist on the battlefield, creating dynamic environments and tactical opportunities. Okatani boldly expresses confidence in Foamstars’ distinct identity, even suggesting “online party shooter” as a fitting genre label.
The Challenge: Building a Soapy Squad
Okatani readily admits the biggest hurdle isn’t the Splatoon comparisons, but attracting a sizeable player base. Dominated by giants like Fortnite and Warzone, the online shooter landscape is unforgiving. To counter this, Square Enix takes a page from Rocket League and Fall Guys, offering Foamstars as a free PS Plus game for a month. Rich Briggs, Square Enix’s Head of Strategic Publishing, explains the rationale: “PS Plus is crucial for building the Foamstars community. By giving subscribers free access for a month, we can establish a strong foundation for long-term engagement.”
Diving into the PS Plus Pool
Briggs believes PS Plus will be the lifeblood of Foamstars, injecting it with instant players and fostering community growth. This “freemium” approach, coupled with the game’s inherently fun and accessible nature, has piqued significant interest. But the true test lies beyond February 6th, the day Foamstars debuts on PS5. Will the initial buzz translate into lasting loyalty after the PS Plus safety net expires?
Only time will tell if Foamstars can carve its own colorful path in the online shooter arena. But with Square Enix’s strategic maneuvers and the inherent appeal of soapy shootouts, the odds are looking bubbly.
