Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the upcoming entry in the popular franchise, promises a thrilling return to Feudal Japan. While the presence of the legendary “African Samurai” Yasuke has garnered much attention, players will also have the opportunity to embody a true Japanese ninja: Naoe. This dual-protagonist system adds a unique layer to the gameplay experience, catering to both fans of classic Assassin’s Creed stealth tactics and those who crave a more direct approach.
A Glimpse into the Characters: Samurai Power vs. Ninja Cunning
Similar to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Shadows allows players to seamlessly switch between Yasuke and Naoe. Yasuke, a historical figure, was a renowned warrior who served under the powerful daimyo Oda Nobunaga. Players who favor head-on combat will find Yasuke’s samurai prowess a perfect fit. His skillset will likely involve powerful swordsmanship, deflecting attacks, and potentially commanding troops in large-scale battles.
Naoe, on the other hand, embodies the essence of the franchise’s signature stealth gameplay. As a fictional character, she is the daughter of the legendary ninja leader Fujibayashi Nagato. Her skillset will revolve around infiltration, silent takedowns, and navigating environments using parkour and a grappling hook. This focus on shadows and cunning tactics caters to players who yearn for the classic Assassin’s Creed experience.
Revamped Stealth Mechanics for a Modern Era
The developers at Ubisoft understand the importance of preserving the core identity of Assassin’s Creed while also injecting a sense of modernity. Game director Charles Benoit emphasizes this: “The things that resonated most with us in Assassin’s Creed were the hidden blade, the assassinations, the ability to blend in with the crowd. So that’s the core we wanted to retain. What we needed to push was to make it feel a little bit more modern in its approach.”
This “modern approach” manifests in a completely dynamic lighting system. Players can utilize the environment strategically. Bright sunlight, torches, and lanterns illuminate vast areas, forcing Naoe to remain in the shadows to avoid detection. However, if escaping the light becomes impossible, she can extinguish these sources to create temporary pockets of darkness.
Jonathan Dumont, the creative director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, elaborates on the importance of parkour: “Parkour has always been something that’s iconic and core to the stealth experience because they go hand in hand. To enhance the parkour abilities, we’ve given Naoe a grappling hook. It’s all based on physics interaction.”
A Choice for Non-Lethal Playstyles
Assassin’s Creed Shadows isn’t simply a return to classic stealth mechanics; it also introduces innovative elements. While eliminating enemies remains an option, players can now choose to incapacitate them instead. This opens the door for a more non-lethal approach, potentially appealing to players who prefer a less violent experience.
A November Release and Beyond
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for release in November 2024. With its dual-protagonist system, revamped stealth mechanics, and focus on player choice, Shadows promises a fresh take on the Assassin’s Creed formula while simultaneously honoring its core identity. Whether you favor the brute force of a samurai or the cunning tactics of a ninja, this upcoming title appears to offer a compelling adventure set against the backdrop of a turbulent Feudal Japan.
